Hills can look like spring. The water usually doesn’t. For most of the year around here, a 4/3 wetsuit for Kaikōura is the suit people actually wear.
When a 4/3 is enough
Spring, autumn, and a lot of winter if you’re surfing and moving. Pair with boots when it’s bitter. If you sit around in the water or run cold, look at a 5/4 or hooded instead — we’ll say so in store.
Choosing the right wetsuit for Kaikōura can enhance your surfing experience.
How we pick one with you
- How long you’re in and how cold you run.
- Stretch vs warmth vs budget.
- Fit — charts lie; try it on if you can.
Rough guide to what we stock
- O’Neill Hyperfreak / Hyper Fire — light, stretchy, easy to paddle. Good if you want freedom over max toastiness. We tested Hyperfreak in ~11–12°C water; stayed comfortable without feeling bulky. [Link Men’s 4/3]
- O’Neill Defender — the workhorse. Warm enough for a lot of Kaikōura sessions, usually better value. Fine one-suit quiver for many people.
- Billabong Furnace Natural — runs warmer; natural rubber / graphene lining. Better if you chill easy.
- Patagonia R3 — warm, durable, eco angle. Feels solid when the water’s around 9–12°C with wind.
Fit and buying
Chest zip vs back zip is your preference. Tall / short sizes matter more than the brand logo. We fit in store at West End. Can’t get here? $5 shipping NZ-wide on suits — or call (03) 319 5028 and we’ll talk size before you order.
Hire instead?
One day in town: hire a suit for $20 (mostly 4/3). Buying makes sense when you’ll wear it through the season.
Coastal Sports — same shop since 2003. Honest advice, not a hard sell.
