Spring Surfing in Kaikoura

We made it! winter surfing has been dam cold this year. Water temperatures have been sitting around the 8c for the last couple of months (50 to 55 for you northerners), with some real cold air temps recorded. Winter swells have been fun, though personally have missed most of the good days due to been dark after work or up the mountains on my days off. Always to much to do not enough time to do it. This year I went soft and ended up with the Flash bomb 5/3mm, first time I’ve had a 5mm wetsuit for the NZ winter, that and 5mm booties, 3mm hood and 3mm gloves, I’m pretty toasty out there. The shops filling up with 3/2mm wetsuits, but it might be November before I get in one, there’s a lot of snow melt to come down the rivers so things will stay chilly for a while yet. Spring surfing in Kaiks is normally pretty good, with plenty of sth swell and easterly coming through still, the easterly winds normally don’t kick in for while yet so get in to it. See you out there hopefully now daylight savings is getting close.
