Press Release from the Kaikoura Cycling Club
Kaikōura Cycling Club has an exciting new project for Kaikōura.
The Kaikōura Cycling Club have spent many months negotiating with the stakeholders to construct an uphill and downhill trail on Mt Fyffe. Recently an agreement was signed with D.O.C. giving the club access to construct this trail. The trail will be called the Kaiterau trail. Kaiterau is thought to be the original name for Mt Fyffe. The trail will climb 360 metres and will be around 4.5 kms in length. The trail will be graduated with many switchbacks to enable almost any rider to climb the trail. It will be classed as an intermediate trail. The downhill trail will be approximately 3.5 kms long and will have shaped berms and will be a rolling downhill trail classed as an intermediate trail. In places running alongside the intermediate trail there will be sections for more experienced riders.
During the long negotiating process fundraising was also proceeding in the hope that permission to build the trail would be approved. The major funder will be the Back Country Trails Trust who have been supportive through the long process. Kaikōura Council have also backed this project and the club has fundraised through events and memberships. D.O.C., Rūnanga o Kaikōura and the local community have also been supportive with a large personal donation from a club member . A raffle to be run in conjunction with the Adventure race could not proceed due to the lockdown. This was well supported with prizes from the Kaikōura community. This raffle will be run in the future. A generous grant from the (Dolphin) Encounter Foundation got the project across the line.
Construction of the trail will take around 3 months so should be up and running for next summer. Get your bikes ready.
