Surfboards NZ: Picked for Real Kiwi Conditions
We ship surfboards, well packed, to main centres around NZ (no rural delivery). Have a look at /shipping-info/ for board freight. Boards aren’t covered by change-of-mind returns, so ring us before you buy and we’ll help you get it right.
Picking a surfboard is mostly about honesty: how often you surf, how fit you are, and what your local break is really like. Most people buy a board that’s too small. We’d rather talk you out of that than sell it to you.
Volume first. Volume (in litres) tells you how much float a board has. As a rough guide:
- Learning: a softboard of 7’0 to 8’0, like the Ocean & Earth Ezi-Rider or Macca Surf School. Lots of float, soft edges, and very forgiving.
- Getting your feet: a mid length or a fun shape like the Aloha Fun Division Mid or Funzarelli. These catch waves easily and they’re still fun when you improve.
- Surfing regularly: a performance groveller or step-up like the JS Raging Bull, Big Baron or Monsta, sized to your weight and fitness.
- Mals: the McCoy All Round Mal or Aloha FUU for small days and long rides.
NZ conditions matter too. Plenty of our surf is cold, so you’re paddling in a 4/3 or 5/4 that slows you down. Add a few litres for that. Smaller, weaker beach breaks reward more volume. Punchy reef and point breaks, like most of Kaikoura, suit a board with a bit more rocker and rail.
Every board here gets looked at by people who surf Kaikoura’s coast. Give us a call on (03) 319 5028 with your height, weight and how often you get in, and we’ll give you a straight recommendation.
FAQ
Can you ship a surfboard anywhere in NZ?
We ship boards to main centres around NZ, properly packed, but not to rural delivery addresses. See /shipping-info/ for rates.
What size surfboard should a beginner buy?
Usually a softboard of 7’0 to 8’0, depending on your weight. More foam means more waves caught, and catching waves is how you learn.
How much volume do I need?
It depends on your weight, fitness and how often you surf. Call us with those numbers and we’ll suggest a litre range rather than guess.
Can I return a surfboard?
Not for change of mind, because volume and feel are personal. That’s why we’d rather talk it through first. If a board is faulty, damaged on arrival or not as described, your Consumer Guarantees Act rights apply. Full terms are at /info/30-days-right-return/.
